Upper Elementary
Grades 4, 5 & 6
Upper Elementary students are truly reaping the benefits of a Montessori preschool education. They have developed the self-control, independence and ability to concentrate which they need to research topics and think about the implications of what they are learning.
The language curriculum is designed to build early literacy through the development of strong reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking and presentation skills. The goal is for every child to become an effective reader and writer with strong communication skills and a true love of reading.
Curriculum:
Language (focus on developing reading, writing, grammar, research, speaking and presentation skills. An introduction to some classic literature.)
Math (to instill a love of the process of math, develop critical thinking skills and accuracy)
Science (biology, zoology, botany, ecology, geography, physical sciences)
Geography and World Cultures (physical, political and economic geography)
History (early human civilization of the world, world cultures, American history)
Practical life: planning and grocery shopping for classroom snacks, keyboard skills
Spanish
Art (Theory and hands-on exploration)
Music (Theory and learning to play recorder)
Physical Education
Also there is a strong emphasis on the concepts of citizenship and community. Students engage in a variety of community service projects as well as work as “big kid” friends and mentors to our Children’s House students during several school-wide events.
